Umrah is overwhelmingly safe, and Saudi authorities manage the holy sites with huge experience. A few sensible precautions help you stay comfortable and focused on worship.
Crowds and staying together
The areas around the Haram can be very busy, especially at prayer times and in Ramadan. Agree a meeting point with your group, keep children close, and note your hotel's name and location in Arabic in case you need to ask directions.
Heat and health
In warmer months, drink plenty of water, use the shaded and air-conditioned areas, and pace your rituals. Carry any regular medication in your hand luggage with a copy of your prescription.
Protect your documents and belongings
Keep your passport, visa and vaccination certificate secure, and carry copies separately. Be mindful of belongings in crowded areas.
Emergency numbers in Saudi Arabia
The unified emergency number is 911 in Makkah, Madinah and the main regions. Other numbers in use include 997 (ambulance/Red Crescent), 998 (civil defence) and 999 (police). Tell your group leader immediately if there's a problem, and contact our 24/7 UK team for support.
