In the Event of a Death During Umrah or Hajj

To pass away in the holy cities is regarded by many as a blessing. Should the worst happen during a pilgrimage, knowing the practical steps in advance can bring some calm at a very difficult time. This is general information; your group leader, our team and the relevant authorities will guide you through each step.
The first steps
Inform your group leader or our representative immediately. They will help notify the Saudi authorities and the nearest hospital, and begin the required procedures.
Burial in Saudi Arabia
Many families choose burial in Makkah or Madinah, which is a source of comfort to Muslims. The authorities and your agent can arrange the ghusl, janazah prayer at the Haram, and burial, usually very swiftly in accordance with Islamic practice.
Documents and next steps
A death certificate is issued locally. If repatriation is preferred instead of local burial, it is a more complex and lengthier process; your agent and the UK embassy or consulate can advise. Notify your travel insurer as early as possible.
